Santa Maria, the Sunny Island: Where is it? You can use Google to locate the Azores, Santa Maria, and the house by using these coordinates 36°56’48.6″N; 25°03’36.3″W or 36.946845; -25.060093
Santa Maria was first discovered in 1427 by navigator Diogo de Silves on his way to Madeira Island. However, Santa Maria discovery was attributed to another Portuguese navigator, Gonçalo Velho Cabral, in 1432, rather than Diogo Silves. Myth tells that on the day of the island discovery, Virgin Mary’s day, Gonçalo Velho Cabral and his crew were celebrating Mass onboard when the crow’s nest man spotted the island, shouting “Santa Maria!”, and this would become the island’s name.
